Seizing on the Spectrum from Black to White

Grey has always been my signature color, and one that I employ frequently at Mar Silver Design. Instead of seeing a dull and lifeless tone, I see grey as a spectrum of purity and elegance, that has the ability to crystalize the aesthetic of a room and leave it ringing with a clear and strong silver. Grey is a particularly apt hue for a contemporary home because it allows for a pure and raw display of the spectrum from black to white, from one extreme to another. All colors have ranges from white to black, but only grey has the achromatic clarity that lets it truly explore the gradient.

A mix of grey shades can create a sultry, yet classic contemporary space. Darker greys can easily add drama to any room, especially set against the brighter shades. In much of my previous work, I have combined these contrasts to create shapes that pop out with strength and beauty.

Sophisticated and elegant, grey allows the palette to open up to subtler changes. Grey can create happy mediums between the two extremes - on one hand they can create rich and grounded shapes that bring dramatic strength, while at the same time they can be made light and sheer for an bright and airy effect.

Greys in a variety of textiles add depth and sensuality to a bedroom, while keeping the design minimal and concise, free from clutter. The leather headboard complements the dovetail grey wood base, which is brought out again by the grey and clear lucite in the side table. Metallic fabrics create a glamorous shimmer while dark grey fur accent pillows and cool linens add great color and tactile contrast.

The range of greys, from stark white to jet black, provide the opportunity to use contrast to its full effect and create bold chiaroscuro designs, optimizing shapes and lines with greater clarity than by mixing colors.
