From the Editor: Big Returns

September means one thing for everyone at athome: the A-List Awards.

We started working on the 2014 event one week after our 2013 awards show, and this year we’re celebrating five years of A-List with a bang! Our celebrity judges have logged their scores and chosen their top projects in each category, and we’re putting the finishing touches on the event. Check out the finalist booklet between pages 48 and 49 of this issue to see who made the list this year—and join us on September 11 at the Palace Theatre to see if your favorite projects come away winners! Tickets are still on sale on athomefc.com. So come on and celebrate design with us at its best—you won’t want to miss it.

But actually, to say we’ve been singularly focused isn’t completely true: We’ve also put together our decorating issue for you. We had such an overwhelmingly enthusiastic response to our first Designers’ Own Homes story last year that we are returning to it again. Five more designers were game to allow me in to photograph their spaces, and for this particular issue, these designers were completely responsible for the styling of their own space. My one and only direction: “Prep your home as you normally would.” So, what you’ll see on page 62 are honest, genuine spaces; personal expression in its purest form. Their participation is a testament to their confidence, talent—and the ability to keep it real. Also featured: a gorgeous waterfront property in Old Greenwich (pg. 84), a builder’s own kitchen and bath put together with a notable A-List designer, and more! Check out the latest in rugs (pg. 30) and a roundup of the newest decorating and travel books.

With a little black book of design pros, plus 112 pages of inspiring ideas in this issue, we’ve got everything you need for your fall projects between these covers. We hope to see you at the A-List on September 11, but if you can’t make it, be sure to pick up our November/December issue to see all the winning projects, plus finalist coverage and party photos.
