From the Editor: Home Base
Home is the most personal of places. There are memories and investments—both monetary and emotional, and sometimes a combination of the two—and identity wrapped up in it. Your home reflects how you live, and it always makes an impression on those who enter it. It may be for this reason that we rush out to buy new dining chairs before our family and friends arrive for the holidays—and we’ve all experienced the frenzied cleaning when we suddenly notice an unexpected guest walking up the driveway.
For designers, who spend every day creating homes that reflect how their clients live, crafting a space for oneself can be a tough task, but in this issue, five professionals invited us into their homes to show us how they live. We’re thrilled to be able to share their spaces starting on page 52. For every other story, I ask for scouting shots or actually walk the property myself, but in this case, what interested me about the spaces was simply that the designers lived there—so in my mind there was no need to scout the locations first. That said, I was happy with what I found. These five designers know their talents, and they have created spaces for how they live in the here and now—whether it’s with children, with a home in transition, or even with the intention to move at some point.
In this issue, I’m also inviting our readers into my own home. If you’ve been following our “Creative Thinking” series on our website, you know I’ve recently added a new studio space to my house in Fairfield. Though it was a lot to tackle with a full-time job, I’m so happy with the results. This project would have been impossible without the fabulous group of pros who worked to make sure things were done right. Assembling the best team possible is a necessity for us all—you skimp on that, and your project could end in disappointment.
But if the forty-eight pages of interiors in this issue aren’t enough for you, come to our A-List Awards at the Stamford Palace Theatre on Thursday, September 12. For designers, it’s the biggest trade event of the year, and the best place to mix and mingle with your fellow designers, architects, builders, and landscape professionals. For readers, it’s the biggest portfolio review you’re ever going to get a chance to take a look at. Come see the work of dozens of top design pros, and assemble your own top team. Get tickets at athomefc.com, and we’ll see you there!
