We’re feeling just about ready for a change of seasons here at athome. After you squeeze in one more beach day, settle in with our latest and get ready for fall. It’s tough to say goodbye to the lazy days of summer, the poolside parties, the sweet sangria—but we’re dreaming of cozy nights by the fire, the leaves changing, and splurging on a few new sweaters (or pillows, or throws) to welcome the season.
You may be thinking of doing a little shopping yourself, in your favorite stores. We wanted to discover a little more about the people curating Fairfield County’s fabulous storefronts, so we got to know the people who run them (“Personal Inventory,” pg. 83), and we think you might be surprised at what we found out. So drop in on them, say hello and see what they have in
store for fall!
While you’re out, look for the latest trends—indigo is big this fall, and chevron is making a comeback too. It reminds me of the ric-rac trim my mother had sewn all over everything in the 70s, but of course, much elevated. Something lacquered is a stylish addition for fall as well, and we’ve also got some knockout books on fashion, architecture and more—plus some pretty incredible bookshelves to display them on.
Our great mix of houses in this issue got us thinking about what makes different people feel at home. For our cover girl, Mar Silver, it’s about making a space modern, serene and sexy. She transformed her Westport antique home into a soothing space where every piece has a place. For Riverside resident and Good Morning America anchor Lara Spencer, home is a place where she keeps all of the pieces that she has collected over years of flea market finds, yard sales and beyond. Her home is funky, colorful, and filled with pieces she’s found, loved, and restored to fit into her stylish space. And lastly, there’s a home designed by Christina Murphy, where the homeowners wanted something in between—not modern, not traditional, something fresh, open and bright, but not over-the-top. Whatever their styles, for all of them, home is a place where they feel comfortable, where all of their favorite things are, and a place that makes them feel happy. We hope you feel the same way about your space.
And we must mention our A-list Awards at the Stamford Palace Theater on September 13th, 2012. It is our biggest trade event of the year, but you don’t have to be a nominee or a design professional to attend—if you’re into a good cocktail party, and love home design (or if you’re thinking of doing some work on your home, and want to check out the work of a whole bunch of architects, designers, and landscape architects at once), the athome team and A-list judges welcome you! (For tickets, go to athomefc.com—and check out the A-list program on page 32!)
If all this doesn’t get you hyped up for fall, we don’t know what will! Enjoy the last days of summer and the first days of the new season, and we’ll see you in November.
