Tie One On



In the ten years since they quit their corporate jobs and began selling silk neckties out of their parents’ home on Martha’s Vineyard, making deliveries in a Jeep Wrangler, Greenwich residents (and brothers) Shep and Ian Murray have put their pink whale on the retail map, so to speak, and made the Vineyard Vines brand synonymous with a laid-back lifestyle.

Along the way they have expanded the product line to include men’s, women’s and children’s apparel and accessories, outgrown three different office spaces, increased their employee roster to more than 200, expanded retail distribution (they now have eight stand-alone stores, including a new outpost in Westport), and racked up sales of more than $25 million annually.

Entertaining has been a cornerstone of their business, whether at the Riverside Yacht Club, on the beach or on one of their fishing boats (they’re avid anglers). Last summer the Murray brothers hosted a dockside summer fete at Westport’s Ned Dimes Marina and invited us to capture them in party mode, offering a rare a peek at how these relaxed CEOs truly unwind.
