Three chic designer’s redefine the workplace

Catherine Cleare's Office

What do Catherine Cleare, Rajni Alex and Jill Kalman have in common? They love going to work in their ultra-chic, light-filled offices, and gave us a behind-the-scenes tour.

Open and airy, Catherine Cleare’s Greenwich office inspires a clear mind for the task at hand.

How does your office reflect your personal style?Catherine Cleare
The first thing that comes to mind for me is its light, bright and airy feel, finished with a mix of contemporary and classic pieces.

What elements did you change when you updated the space?
We added new floors, walls, ceilings, and windows, and put in all new furnishings.

What’s your favorite thing in here?

It has to be the Lucite console table under the flat-screen TV.

How does this design show clients what you’re all about?
The background of the space is neutral so that the focus is on the framed portfolio photographs of our projects that are hanging on the walls.

Pops of modernism and lacquered blue show Rajni Alex’s clients that risks can be rewarding.

What was your old space like and why did it need an update?Rajni Alex
I was working from home and business expanded. This space was a regular office but had beautiful glass windows and high ceilings. I wanted clients to walk in and have a “wow” moment.

What does this office say to your clients?
We went bold with the colors and included a high-gloss lacquered trim. Sometimes clients are hesitant to use bold color, but this shows it can be tempered and tasteful. It’s a dance.

How does this space inspire you?
It feels like an amazing Tribeca loft, not like you’re going into work. It inspires me every day. It feels like home.

What’s your favorite part about this design?
I love the blue accents, and there’s a great Phillip Jeffries wallpaper that looks like it’s covered with black nail-heads. But my favorite thing is the Arteriors chandelier in the entryway.

Thanks to a neutral color palette and superb organization, Jill Kalman’s office is completely zen.

How does this office reflect your personal style?
The neutral walls and furniture topped with fun accents and colors is totally me. Pops of orange and green, like the patterned ottomans, match my logo colors.

What elements help you stay organized?
I have a big library wall with cubbies of fabric samples. My worktable helps too, so I can set up projects and have a comfortable workspace.

How does this space inspire you?
It’s really sunny and bright. I purposely painted it in neutrals because I’m always looking at color and texture for my work. It pops against the plain background.

What’s your favorite thing in here?
I love my color wheel from design school. I framed it and hung it above my desk, where I look at it every day.
