Diptyque Now Open in Westport

Parisian fragrance company opens first Connecticut shop

Famed Parisian fragrance company diptyque has opened their first shop in Connecticut at 47 Main Street in Westport. We visited the new location and got some tips and history for shoppers:

1961: Three friends—painter Desmond Knox-Leet, interior designer Christiane Gautrot, and theatre director and set designer Yves Coueslant—decided to open a store on 34 boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris, where they sold their own soft furnishings, and pieces brought back from their travels all over the world.

1963: Diptyque’s first line of candles is introduced, including Aubépine, Cannelle and Thé. Tip from store manager Dee Livingston: Burn new candles for at least 2-3 hours until the wax liquefies across the top, so it will burn down evenly.

1968: Diptyque composed its first eau de toilette, L’Eau, inspired by a 16th-century potpourri recipe and the scent of pomanders.

2011: For the company’s 50th anniversary, diptyque created a scent that captured the scent of the flagship store. The name is, obviously, 34 boulevard saint germain.

2013: Diptype arrives Westport. Check out the company’s 2013 holiday collection, including Pine Bark, Indian Incense, and Orange Chai scents. Their standard scent Feu de Bois would also be great for the holidays—it smells just like a wood-burning fire.

With the holidays approaching fast, a stop into diptyque can get your own home ready for guests, or help you cross some friends and family members off of your list. The company’s unique gift wrapping, using three different colored sheets of tissue paper, makes every purchase look as lovely as it smells.
